Homeschooling in Poland:
What Parents Need to Know in 2026-2027
A clear, simple guide for families exploring their options.
Homeschooling in Poland is growing
Across Europe, more and more families are choosing to educate their children from home — for the flexibility, for travel, for wellbeing, or simply because it fits their child better than a traditional classroom.
In Poland, educating your child from home — known locally as Edukacja domowa — comes with its own rules, which we walk through below. Increasingly, families meet them by enrolling in an accredited online school, so their child still gets live teaching, structure, and real friendships.
If you’re exploring your options, here’s what you need to know — and how bina can help if you’d rather not figure it all out on your own.
Is schooling from home legal in Poland?
Yes. Home education (edukacja domowa) is explicitly permitted under Poland's Education Law (Prawo oświatowe, art. 37). It is a long-standing, mainstream route: your child fulfils compulsory education from home rather than in a classroom, and the law clearly provides for it.
The model works through a school. Your child must be formally enrolled in a Polish school (public or non-public), and that school's principal (dyrektor) issues an administrative decision (zezwolenie) permitting the child to learn outside the school. A reform in force from 1 July 2021 made this much simpler: there is no longer any requirement for an opinion from a psychological-pedagogical counselling centre, and the old rule limiting you to a school in your home voivodeship was abolished, so you can choose any edukacja-domowa-friendly school anywhere in Poland. To apply, parents submit declarations that they will provide suitable learning conditions and that the child will sit the annual exams.
Each school year the child takes classification exams (egzamin klasyfikacyjny) in the relevant subjects of Poland's national curriculum (podstawa programowa), administered by the enrolling school. Passing these promotes the child to the next grade; the day-to-day teaching, pace and materials are otherwise up to the family. Note Polish law distinguishes compulsory schooling (obowiązek szkolny, primary, to the end of grade 8 around age 15) from the broader duty of compulsory education or training (obowiązek nauki) that runs to age 18.
What are the steps to school from home in Poland?
- Choose a Polish edukacja-domowa school — Enroll your child with a Polish school (public or non-public) that supports home education. Thanks to the 2021 reform you can pick any such school nationwide, not just one in your region.
- Apply to the principal (dyrektor) for permission — Submit the application for edukacja domowa, including your declarations that you will provide suitable learning conditions and that your child will sit the annual exams. The dyrektor issues an administrative decision (zezwolenie); no psychological-pedagogical opinion is needed.
- Plan teaching against the national curriculum — Organise daily learning so your child covers Poland's core curriculum (podstawa programowa) for their grade. This is where an accredited online school like bina takes the teaching load off you with live lessons and a structured programme.
- Prepare for and sit the annual classification exams — Each school year your child takes the egzamin klasyfikacyjny in the relevant subjects, administered by the enrolling school. Passing promotes them to the next grade and keeps the permission valid.
- Keep records and renew each year — Maintain the relationship with the enrolling school and keep evidence of progress. The permission can be withdrawn if a child does not sit or pass the annual exams without justification, so stay on top of the yearly cycle.
