Homeschooling in Iceland:
What Parents Need to Know in 2026-2027
A clear, simple guide for families exploring their options.
Homeschooling in Iceland is growing
Across Europe, more and more families are choosing to educate their children from home — for the flexibility, for travel, for wellbeing, or simply because it fits their child better than a traditional classroom.
In Iceland, educating your child from home — known locally as Heimakennsla — comes with its own rules, which we walk through below. Increasingly, families meet them by enrolling in an accredited online school, so their child still gets live teaching, structure, and real friendships.
If you’re exploring your options, here’s what you need to know — and how bina can help if you’d rather not figure it all out on your own.
Is schooling from home legal in Iceland?
Education is compulsory in Iceland for every child aged 6 to 16, and parents are responsible for registering their child for compulsory school (grunnskóli) in the municipality where the family is legally domiciled. Independent home education (heimakennsla) is permitted under Article 46 of the Compulsory School Act No. 91/2008 and Regulation No. 531/2009, but it is one of the most tightly controlled routes in Europe: the municipality must grant a (usually annual) exemption, at least one parent normally must hold a licence to teach in compulsory schools, the child stays linked to a local school for advice and supervision, and the family must follow the national curriculum (Aðalnámskrá) and sit nationally coordinated assessments.
Because of the teaching-licence requirement, fully independent homeschooling is rare and out of reach for most families. The more practical route for many parents who want their child to learn from home is enrolment in a recognised school that delivers its programme remotely, rather than self-teaching under the heimakennsla exemption.
An accredited online international school such as bina lets your child do their schooling from home with qualified live teachers and a full structured curriculum. Iceland has no explicit statute saying a foreign online school automatically satisfies compulsory education, and the exemption rules are administered locally, so always confirm with your municipality (sveitarfélag) how this fits your child's compulsory-education status, especially if you remain domiciled in Iceland.
What are the steps to school from home in Iceland?
- Confirm your child's compulsory-education status — Compulsory schooling covers ages 6 to 16. Contact your municipality (sveitarfélag) to understand how your plan to school from home is recorded and what your obligations are.
- Understand the heimakennsla exemption — If you intend to teach the child yourself, apply to your municipality for a home-education exemption under Regulation No. 531/2009. Be aware that at least one parent normally must hold a compulsory-school teaching licence and the exemption is typically reviewed every year.
- Choose your route: self-teach or enrol in a recognised school — Given the licence requirement, many families instead enrol in a recognised school that teaches remotely. Discuss with your municipality whether an accredited online school satisfies your child's schooling obligation.
- Enrol with bina and learn from home — bina is an accredited online international school for ages 4 to 15 with live qualified teachers and a complete curriculum, so your child does real schooling from home rather than DIY lessons.
- Keep records and stay in contact with the municipality — Whichever route you take, keep your enrolment, progress reports and assessment records, and stay in touch with your municipality so your child's status remains clear and compliant.
An accredited online school like bina makes much of this simpler: we provide the curriculum, the live teaching, and the progress records your authority may ask to see — so you can focus on being the parent.

The questions we hear most from parents like you
Yes, but it is tightly regulated. Independent home education (heimakennsla) is allowed only with a municipal exemption, and at least one parent normally must hold a licence to teach in compulsory schools. Enrolling in a recognised school that teaches from home is an easier route for most families.
Homeschooling can feel overwhelming. It doesn't have to.
